About us
Kapper is a new fashion brand focusing on alternative and (more) sustainable materials. It is important to underline, that Kapper is not an Apple Leather brand. In the future, Kapper will (hopefully) be launching products and collections in other and even more sustainable materials.
Founders
Kapper is founded by Amalie Duborg and Jonas Kapper. They got to know each-other back in the beginning of 2020.
Amalie went to Kolding design school, where her area of focus was sustainable design in accessories. Amalie is the designer of the bags, where every little detail has been cared for and thought through. Within the last couple of years, Amalie has been doing a lot of projects, mostly with bags. Trying to design from re-used material, types of conventional leather and a lot more. Amalie wanted to work with re-used materials, because re-cycling of items are the most sustainable. Unfortunately she got to know, how hard it is to build something commercial based on recycling as we know it.
Jonas is the usual cliché story of a high-school dropout. Jonas has a (despite his young age) a long career in marketing, where his main area of focus has been online sales. Throughout his career in fashion, he had to help so many different brands greenwash, which made him hate the ugly parts of fashion so much. Even brands who are loved by danes are doing it. Almost everyone is lying, as soon as it suits their commercial perspectives. Marketing is not about lying, it is about telling the story about the product in a good way so that it becomes understandable to everyone. Currently Jonas is still working with a small range of brands, from the biggest danish brands to small start-ups, until enough bags has been sold to go full-time in Kapper. When he is not to find at the office, he can be found behind decks in clubs or parties.
Ambitions
We asked Jonas - "what is your ambitions with Kapper?", to that he answered:
"I want Kapper to be big. I'm interested in building businesses and brands, but i feel the same way about a company that I feel about my private life. A lot of things need to unite before it is nice. As an example, what is nice about building a business if you are sacrificing your relations to your girlfriend, friends and family? Nothing. The same goes for a business: whats nice about building a business if you are straight up lying to your audience, trying to greenwash your big-pile-of-environmentally-damaging-shit? Yup, that's right - nothing .. I don't want to strive for 'perfect'. Perfect does not exist. Doing better exists - and doing better day by day exists. All of our business-targets will be combined with the development of the company. If sales and revenue are great within 4 years, but we are still doing the same styles in the same 50% Apple Leather 50% PU mix, we have not succeeded. We have failed. This is not about buying yachts, fast cars or big houses, this is about showing the industry that it is impossible to be better and still make a business of it. (and no, if you are measuring doing better in "we only burned 1 ton of clothes this year", you are so bad, that doing better does not count).
The production
Currently the bags are sewn in a small atelier in Italy. It is a family-owned business on its 1st generation (soon to be second). The family who runs it are the sweetest and kindest people. They are currently (and have always been) working with some of the largest brands in the world, such as lv, pra.. and dg - you know them. Even though they are working with them, they choose to invest in a small Danish company, because they wanted to work with new and more sustainable materials as well. They are far-sighted, even though Italians are almost always described as conservative people. The company is run by men AND WOMEN, which means a lot to us. The employees are treated right, from what we have seen**. From the few times Jonas and Amalie have met the family, eaten with them all and seen the atelier, it is dystopic to think that they would ever do anything bad to their employees.
**Kapper made a promise to be honest. Therefore Kapper can only tell about own experience and gut-feeling about the production. Kapper is currently not doubting the team (at all), but does not want to make a statement that cannot with 100% certainty be promised.
